On a sunny L.A. afternoon, stars and their makeup whizzes share secrets perfected in the Hollywood trenches, all for a good cause.

The dexterous men and women in charge of putting on a celebrity’s game face—i.e., their favorite makeup artists—are such crucial al- lies and constant companions that they often transcend the line be- tween glam-squad captain and full-time best friend. Which is why Dior’s eighth annual luncheon benefiting international medical charity Operation Smile (each makeup artist brings a famous client as a date; for every couple, Dior donates one surgery for a child born with a facial deformity in a developing country) is such a well-attend- ed event. This year, on the flower-festooned penthouse terrace of the London West Hollywood Hotel, the chummy duos divulged time-tested how-tos, from undetectable daytime foundation to secrets for dark complexions to the case for ’80s-level blush.

Actress Rachel McAdams & Kayleen McAdams
RACHEL: My beauty inspiration day-to-day is my sister [makeup artist Kayleen]. She’s comfortable in her skin and doesn’t feel the need to wear makeup every day, which inspires me to do the same. She’s weaned me off my addiction to over-blushing, but she’s always up for trying out-there ideas.

KAYLEEN: Her pale skin works well with lots of different shades. I tend to use every color except black when giving her a smoky eye. I love dark plums (2) and coppery bronze shades (3) instead to make the look less harsh. I avoid powdery shadows and stick to cream ones—they’re very blendable and make the look wearable for day. Another great option is to draw on the lid with eyeliner and blend with a smudge brush until there are no harsh lines. A few coats of mascara (1) complete a smoky eye.

RACHEL: I’m also a lipstick girl and usually prefer matte to shiny; I feel like matte lends it- self to a fuller-looking lip. And I love a lip stain; RMS makes great cream blushes that double as stains. I don’t go any- where without Emu lip balm; it’s a great foundation under lipstick, and it’s very light.

KAYLEEN: We both love to play with different lip shades. Nars lip pencils can always be found in my makeup bag.
